fabianAfter reaching the shortlist in the International Product Design Awards with the Crossed Legged Lounge Chair Fabiaan Van Severen of Indera answers our design questions.

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms?

Although all kind of styles have been tried out, the importance of design lies in the making of quality products that can stand time. Without forgetting new technologies and experiment, the most important thing is making products that people like, and will like forever. This is also the best guarantee for sustainability.

What are the key influencing elements at present?

No doubt about it, sixties and seventies are hot for the moment, but the main influence the last 50 years is modernism.

What sort of projects are you working on at the moment?

I am working on the completing of the ‘Crossed Legs ” collection. Ten years after the still successful “no nonsense” collection of bags, I am working on some new bags.

A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life?

I’ve been doing this for 30 years now, and although it is not always financially rewarding. I am doing what I like for all these years. As it is so diverse, you never get bored.

Name five key essentials for 2013 and beyond.

Evident, natural, functional, smart, sustainable.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

Don’t make junk. Always asking yourself, will people want this, do I want this at home.

How important do you feel Design Awards are as recognition of designers talents and achievements?

If communicated well, awards can do a lot to promote good design.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?Making new, lovely, daring and smart things that people will like for as long as possible. And for me the hardest thing, bring them to editors.
