design et al are delighted to announce that Bernard Interiors have been shortlisted for Residential £1-2.5 Million (Project by Value) Award within The International Design and Architecture Awards 2018.
A prestigious private client appointed Bernard Interiors to oversee the renovation and architectural works of their Category A Listed building, situated in the heart of Glasgow’s historic Park District. Sadly, after being utilised as office space throughout the 90s, the property fell into disrepair and had lain derelict for several years. The challenge for Bernard Interiors was to create an inspirational interior, incorporating all the comforts and conveniences of contemporary living yet without losing the features reflecting the building’s history and importance. Park Terrace was required to be an inviting family home, but it also had to offer flexible living spaces, facilitate grand, formal entertaining, with every glance packed with high end detail and finishes – a ‘wow factor’ at every turn.
Due to the size and complexity of the building (9,700sq ft), Bernard Interiors began the process by planning and implementing the restoration of period features throughout, calling on years of experience to bring back to life ornate cornicing, ceiling roses, period fireplaces, vast bay windows and a suitably grand entrance hall with its four-metre-high ceiling. In order to do this correctly and achieve the functionality and look, the building was pared back to basics. This allowed full access for the contractors to attend to all the key features, such as the sweeping, central staircase. The internal lift was then restored and recommissioned, adorned with mirrored panelling, gold leaf paint, appropriately complemented with art deco, brass fixtures, and fittings on every floor.
Following the revival of the key features to the fabric of the building, artisans were commissioned to gradually build layers of features and finishes, to be at one with both the building and the brief. One of the more striking features on entering Park Terrace is the bespoke chandelier, a waterfall of thousands of smoked glass crystals cascading from the top floor, down through the centre of the stairwell to the entrance hall. Designed by UK artist George Singer, this came about as a result of the successful collaboration between Jen Bernard and the developer.
The design is contemporary and truly delivers on all aspects of the client’s brief. The family were able to move seamlessly into their new home which provides ample space and stylish rooms throughout in which they can relax, entertain, work, and enjoy. It was vital that the design scheme incorporated the restoration of stunning period features throughout, and at the same time provided relaxed and flexible living spaces. The crisp, clean interior design schemes to the front of the property, frame the expansive views across Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow’s city landscape and beyond.
