design et al are delighted to announce that AV Architects have been shortlisted for Residential Architectural Property in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2016

Little Winter House is all about balance; the new with the familiar, the opulent with the reserved. The client’s brief was to mange the opposing needs for a modern family home that was of its time with the desire that it co-existed within a mature street scape. The result is a bold contemporary architecture that uses the sites topography to create different spaces and volumes behind sample brick and rendered facades.

The staircase is a thing of wonder, the normally hidden element of structural steel being celebrated to create the expressive steel staircase whose steps are over clad with solid oak. The study and duplex gym are accessed off the staircase’s half landings, with both spaces backing onto the theatrical high library corridor.

Lighting, audiovisual technology and temperature controlled opening windows combine with solar thermal water heating, PV array on the roof and electric car charging point to complete the environmental package. The result is an innovative house that is modern and lives up to the client’s design brief and vision. IDA16_AVArchitects_LittleWinterHouse_ResidentialArchitecturalProperty_2
