Congratulations to PEEK Architecture winner of the Residential £5 Million Plus (Property by Value) Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2017

design et al are delighted to announce that PEEK Architecture have won the Residential £5 Million Plus (Property by Value) Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2017.

The property is a townhouse in the heart of Kensington, which had not been touched for several years. It was transformed into a light and airy residence, complete with an additional basement storey, with rear and roof extensions. The building had been untouched for several years and the brief was to create a flexible family house, suitable for informal and formal entertaining. An element of the original character was retained to the principle levels, complete with painted paneling, recreated plaster cornicing and traditional details.

The lower floors were opened up completely and given a more modern treatment. Minimally styled staircases were designed for these levels, and a mix of timbers and stone retain a materiality throughout. A common thread is the use of grey, smoked oak for the chevron floors and bespoke joinery. With a grand house like this, the entrance hall is extremely important. The hall tiles were bespoke designed and cut from Fumed Emperador, White Emperador and Silver Emperador stone, set and laid in a 3D pattern. This provides for a wow factor when entering. Great detail was put into finishes and detailing throughout, so that there is interest and texture to most surfaces.

The house is a well functioning family home, and the palette used creates a warm and interesting back drop. Even items such as the TV wall in the lower ground family room, has a stone clad finish, referencing the York stone garden beyond. The lightwell to the rear works well by providing views of the green wall from basement to upper ground, creating an internal oasis away from the bustle of Kensington High Street.
