deVOL Kitchens have been shortlisted for Kitchen Design Over £50,000 Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020
Inspired by mid-century interiors and haberdashery shops, the Cotes Mill Haberdashery Kitchen is the most atmospheric and nostalgic kitchen ever. It’s moody and atmospheric and the perfect combination of traditional yet unexpected. The glazed wall of doors and windows fitted with heritage glass is a window into another era where everything is beautifully organised, yet gloriously simple. The use of limewash paint and embossed wallpaper has given the room a character that can’t be created by a simple paint finish, it has so much more texture and personality.
The two runs of furniture are reminiscent of a shopkeeper’s domain, the back run with all the necessary cupboards for getting down to business. In front, an elegant and slender island where the shopkeeper will turn his attention to his customers and friends, where things get sociable and chatty. This type of layout is one of deVOL Kitchens’ favourites, especially in a long room where you have the luxury of space.
The combination of glazed and tambour doors in a beautifully rich shade appear vintage at first sight, this is intentional and creates a room that feels really authentic. The addition of Carrara marble and hand-aged copper, mottled to perfection in deVOL Kitchens’ own studio, give it an unexpected twist of modernity. This room is filled with treasures from antique fairs and flea markets and it’s this attention to detail that makes people smile when they enter the Cotes Mill Haberdashery Kitchen.
deVOL Kitchens’ Haberdasher’s furniture is very special. This range is inspired by mid-century furniture and old gentlemen’s haberdasheries, traditional shops with glass doors and sliding drawers, of row upon row of lift-up oak cubbyholes full of ribbons and buttons, patterns and fabrics and soft balls of wool. The furniture is made of oak and has here been finished in their classic one-coat tinted oil, adding a slight stain and richness to the finish of the timber. And it’s everything else that is paired with it that makes it so special, the mix of vintage accessories, the dark paint colour, the classic worktop materials. It has resulted in a very beloved and admired space.
