What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms?

Towards a sense of place.

What projects are you currently working on?

Big one off houses generally, but also a storage facility for classic cars which is very exciting.

A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life?

Being a designer is definitely a life choice, which my wife understands!  No matter if you are relaxing in a movie, or visiting somewhere new, your mind is always taking in details, textures, volumes.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2013 and beyond?

I try not to use themes.  A good piece of design should be firmly driven by its use and place.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

Use professionals.

How important are the international yacht and aviation awards as recognition of talent and achievement?

It’s a great platform for recognition in what is a small and slightly neglected sector.

How do relax?

Sport.  It is the only thing that properly clears my mind.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

Become a father for a start.  In a work sense, I have some very exciting projects which will be on site and coming to fruition.  All my energies will be taken in making sure that every detail is correct.

Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself…

The car you drive?

Cars are a waste of time in London, bikes are the only way.

Your favourite place to travel to in the world?

Anywhere new.  I’m particularly interested in South America at the moment.

Your favourite Hotel/ Restaurant / Bar?

I prefer small, family-run places.  The Museum Hotel in Cappadocia is great.  A cocktail on a winter’s evening at the Barbican Lounge is also very enjoyable.

The place that gives you the most energy?

The Southern Alps.

And the place that enables you to totally relax?

Therme Vals.  The most stressful thing is choosing your wine for dinner.

Your favourite food and drink?

Anything my wife prepares.  She’s an amazing cook.
