Congratulations to Douglas Design Studio shortlisted for Kitchen Design Over £50,000 Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2018

design et al are delighted to announce that Douglas Design Studio have been shortlisted for Kitchen Design Over £50,000 Award within The International Design and Architecture Awards 2018.

Positioned high in a building overlooking a ravine this kitchen features a large bow window that extends the experience of this room out over the peaceful view. The finishes are rich, warm, and fresh using Mozambique wood, marble, stainless steel and polished, white porcelain. Kitchens used to be rooms hidden away, utilitarian, and often dark, but in this space, it holds a place of prominence as the heart of the home.

Now treated as a hub, the kitchen was moved to a more prominent place in the home, right off the main foyer for convenience and flow, and to take advantage of the existing large floor to ceiling bow window (formerly the dining room). To reflect the importance of the room, Douglas Design Studio selected finishes as elegant as the entertaining parts of the home.  Design elements were introduced that refine the experience without losing function. For example, the height difference between the upper cabinets is less noticeable with a stainless-steel ribbon, used as a unifying band around the whole room. Another solution introduced for efficiency is the television above the oven which is mounted to a concealed hinge, providing clear access for storage behind.

The renovation of this existing 5000 square foot home within a luxury condominium building involved moving key rooms like this kitchen to new locations. Condominium work can be intricate and less flexible than residential work. Douglas Design Studio ensured that they met their construction deadlines and did not disturb the neighbours below with the plumbing changes, due to careful use of existing plumbing, venting and water-lines.

The centre island of the kitchen is in an oval shape to complement the floor to ceiling bow window with its stunning ravine views. Featuring high-gloss Mozambique wood, the palette to feels harmonious with the views. Custom stools were designed and arranged in a petal-like format at the end of the island. Integrated hidden handles on the cabinetry give the room a sleek and polished look.
