GA Design have won in the International Hotel & Property Awards 2015. The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam will compete for the Hotel 50-200 Rooms Award (Europe).
Set within six elegantly restored 17th century canal houses, the new Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam transports their guests to a world of discreet luxury and historical refinement.
The interiors of the buildings reflect Dutch restrained elegance. The design approach was to create a classic contemporary interior with strong reference to location and maritime history. Carefully sourced finishes, design details, textures and products relate directly to the story of Amsterdam during the Age of Discovery.
Within the interior spaces of the Heritage buildings, a unique authentic experience has been created using products synonymous with the era such as fine linen and bespoke one-off designs – interiors which evoke the essence of the Dutch in a clean, defined manner. The entrance reveals a subtle décor with antique lantern illuminating the elaborate ceilings. A deep soft rug on a classic marble floor remains current with fresh tones and a modern take on the historic carpets of old Amsterdam. Residential touches add warmth and intrigue in the rich timber of a decorative console, a sourced heritage mirror and a feature clock.
The interiors still retain much of the period detailing including exquisite plaster work designs, cornices, ceilings, architraves and also several authentic fireplaces which are now a focal point of the new guestrooms. To balance out the ornateness of these period features uncluttered, fresh, light rooms have been created in which the feeling of openness pervades whilst natural light is maximised through full height windows where drapery is restrained. Bathrooms are crisp yet calm with historically referenced pattern and accessories. Decoration is soft and sophisticated with accents of lapiz blue and stronger ochre colours, used historically by Vermeer and his contemporaries.
