Gary Kilworth, Director of OFTB, tells us his key influencing elements in design at present

Name: Gary Kilworth
Company: Out From The Blue, oftb
Position within company: Director

What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? Design in my field is all about blurring the lines between the interior and the exterior. The Australian way of life is driving the function of outdoor rooms.

What are the key influencing elements at present? Simplicity in movement from colour and materials

What sort of projects are you working on at the moment? Most of our projects are high end domestic pool spaces.

A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life? A great wife with 4 beautiful children allows for the balance. We have a very clear goal for what we want out of life.

Name 5 key essentials for 2012 and beyond. Diversity, Leadership, Communication, honesty and being ethical in everything we do.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Become an effective questioner and listener.

How important do you feel Design Awards are as recognition of designers talents and achievements? Self belief can only carry you so far so recognition amongst peers is the icing on the cake. However I feel real value of awards must come from the general population.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? To enter the East Asian market in Landscape design and Pool construction.

Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself
The car you drive? Lexis 450 Hybrid.
Your favourite place to travel to in the world? Love Australia and Southern Italy.
The place that gives you the most energy? Phoenix Arizona, is a great place we go each year for a catch up with other pool builders (designers)
And the place that enables you to totally relax? Broom (Australia)
Your favourite food and drink? Curried sausages and beer
Anything else interesting?

This is a creed I try to live by.
I will commit to learn more and to serve more. I will save more. Then, I will enjoy the beautiful experience of being able to give more.
