Luisa Barnes Interior Design have been shortlisted for Kitchen Design over £50,000 Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020.

The kitchen in this Edwardian family home, in West London, was extended and designed 17 years ago, since then the family’s needs have changed. The family no longer required as much storage as they had when their children were younger. Therefore, the brief for Luisa Barnes Interior Design was to create a kitchen with a much smarter, sleeker and contemporary feel whilst retaining its functionality. The client was keen to declutter and in the words of William Morris, ‘have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.’

The client wanted to maximise the use of the natural light through the Velux windows, so Luisa Barnes Interior Design replaced the high-level units with a shelf that adds interest by displaying art and key objects. The client also had a painting by Jenny Hirst which was a source of inspiration for the colour scheme with its calm and gentle blues and greys.

As the clients enjoy hosting family gatherings and entertaining friends, they requested an island and a large dining table. In order to increase the functionality of the kitchen, the new design included a combination microwave/ oven as well as a single oven and a boiling water tap. To retain the sleek and clean look of the kitchen, Luisa Barnes Interior Design included an induction hob and integrated appliances in the design. For entertaining purposes, the client requested a tall drinks fridge and the latest Sonos speakers that are placed in the ceiling to remain hidden from view.

Luisa Barnes Interior Design’s favourite aspect of the proejct is the island in wrap around Neolith Estatuario stone. It gives the room a real wow factor and is a fabulous focal point. It has a very contemporary feel and is great for entertaining and informal dining. The LED lights installed under the island and the Tala pendant lights over the island transform the feel of the kitchen in the evening.
