Intarya, shortlisted for multiple awards within the The International Design & Architecture Awards 2013, have successfully won the Bedroom Award with a stylish project located within a 3-bedroom apartment at the Lancasters, Hyde Park, London.
Design Brief:
“Our client was keen for us to answer two specific requirements; to exaggerate the four metre high ceilings but not so far as to sacrifice her other desire for a comfortable and at once elegant Master Bedroom. One way to deliver on the first request was to install full height curtains that draw the eye upwards, furthered still by their simple design. The sloped window wall presented us with an awkward architectural detail that was solved by way of bespoke holdbacks, commissioned to allow the curtains to follow the angle of the wall, giving a sleek, unfussy look.
“The curtain colour and texture play an important role in approaching our client’s second request to calm the dramatic space. Their soft taupe colour blends with the overall, pared down colour scheme of neutrals and gold, adding to the feeling of warmth, whilst the silk wool fabric introduces an element of sophistication. Understated luxury follows through the scheme with subtle inclusions of shagreen, silk velvets and bespoke embroidery for an uncomplicated, calm bedroom.”
The pared down colour scheme creates a warm, luxurious feel.
Favourite/key aspect of the project:
“We decided to create a separate area for the Master Dressing Room. It was transformed by bespoke gloss lacquered joinery in a taupe colour that introduces a sense of flow from the connecting bedroom. The space was maximised to include a combination of open shelves, shoe drawers, clothes hanging and a dressing table area, all tailored to our client’s needs. Besides its requirement to function practically, a mixture of luxurious finishes, seen in the horsehair drawer fronts, ostrich leather lined internals and the shagreen covered dressing table, combine to convey a smart sophistication.”
The room showcases only the most exquisite, desirable finishes throughout.
Why does the design work so well?
“Our client’s love of vintage furniture and lighting was incorporated within the scheme of the room, making it a completely tailored, personal space that is individual to our client. Within this context there are some key pieces of note, namely the gilt metal convex mirror that hangs above the bed, with its frame of organic entwining tree branches and the statement starburst selenite chandelier. The curved shape of the end of bed chaise references the 50s but vintage references and its influence on the overall design filters down yet further, to subtle antique beading on the hand-embroidered bed cushions, completing a truly cohesive scheme.
“As a contrast to the neutral colour scheme, the wardrobes on the mezzanine level were wrapped in hand printed gold leaf wallpaper that adds to the glamorous feel of the room. The same wall covering was used on a free standing wall on the bedroom level, against which a specially commissioned TV cabinet showcases a beautiful bird’s eye maple and fabric covered doors, finished with antique brass Greek key handles that tie in perfectly.”
