Villa Sol de Mallorca by Knox Design

Knox Design have been Shortlisted for Living Space – Europe Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020.

Justine Knox was contacted by the developer to help with the furnishing and staging of this Modern purpose-built two storey residence. The brief was to create a holiday home for grown-up families that spoke of luxury elegance throughout.

The ground floor living area was long and narrow; it needed to be carefully furnished to define each space with its own purpose, while preserving the open plan design. The team added a partition wall between the entrance lobby and the dining space in order to add intimacy to the dining area and provide a focal point opposite the front door. Lighting elements were added to covings, low level staircase treads and lamps overhanging the chrome and oak dining table and the kitchen island. A further touch of glamour was added by the use of antique mirror as the kitchen back-splash. Justine added a further lounge area upstairs, featuring furniture, soft tones and fabrics, as well as artwork reflecting the relaxing mint and sand palette with lilac accents. The upholstered bed base and headboard in purple velvet of the master bedroom, setting off the iconic zig-zag Missoni throw and colourful corner armchair, is a bold and colourful reminder that neutrals and colours, if tastefully combined, work wonders.

Outside, the anthracite grey and neutrals of the building’s structural elements have been replicated in the terrace furniture, which is easy to mix and match. When presented with an open plan space, the challenge lies in defining each individual area, while still retaining the flow and harmony between them. The design works so well as the spaces have been well-defined and offer a variety of areas for the residents, both indoors and outdoors, to relax or socialise.

The ‘Modern’ architectural style of this house called for muted colours and streamlined spaces. Justine worked with a chromatic range that stretched from anthracite grey, to sand, cool mint and ivories, plus accent colours strategically placed in soft furnishings, artwork and a few choice pieces, incorporating glass and metal to provide luminosity and spaciousness.
