LUNA Chair by Sollands

Sollands have been shortlisted for Seating Award in The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2020.

Sollands was in need of a new chair as the next piece of art furniture for display in their gallery, a construction that would showcase the individuality of Sollands’ design, as well as demonstrate the skill of true British Craftsmanship from their team working in the Norfolk atelier.

Grazyna Solland (Gra), Director and Designer of Sollands, composed a brief for an elegant and contemporary chair with clean lines, that would integrate into several rooms and settings. It was imperative that the LUNA Chairs be adaptable and customisable in order to satisfy a key requirement of their company to produce distinct, innovative, individual pieces for designers and clients, resulting in a unique piece every time. Additionally, and equally as important, the chair had to be comfortable, a challenge for Sollands, as the team had to consider the different variables of height and size of their clients.

Gra produced sketches and decided on a generous curved back that would embrace the sitter, rather than chair arms. Gra established a fully upholstered seat rather than a seat cushion, as this would remain neat when the sitter stood up. Finally, substantial solid wood legs, shaped and sculptured, were added to balance the design.

The atelier started prototyping and following numerous variations the exact curve and angle of the back was set. The width, depth and height of the chair, including the seat height were all fine tuned. In addition, the chair was designed to receive a small back cushion if desired, providing comfort for shorter sitters, while the elegant curved back recalled the crescent of the moon, inspiring the choice of the name LUNA for the chair.

Following the production of the first pair of chairs, Gra produced a pixilated design for the outside backs. She worked closely with their team of craftsmen, who hand cut the squares for the design from carefully chosen sections of numerous veneers, which brought to life her LUNA PIX chairs. Gra then increased the back height and the striking LUNA G chairs were fashioned. To date three LUNA G chairs have been produced. The first with an intricate pixilated design on the outside back, the second dressed with brass studs, and the third with a fun mix of velvet and dyed sheepskin upholstery.
