design et al are delighted to announce that Rigby & Rigby have been shortlisted for Living Space – UK Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2019.

The contemporary living space and a bright, vibrant colour scheme are central to the design scheme of this elegant Penthouse apartment. Rigby & Rigby had the opportunity to develop and drive a full-scale revision of a contemporary apartment in the central thoroughfare of Covent Garden. The brief was to provide a design scheme which accentuates the original features of the building with contemporary furniture and fittings. With the close proximity to Covent Garden, the scheme captures the dynamic and vibrant atmosphere of its surroundings, whilst marrying with the traditional Edwardian architecture of its own, and its neighbouring buildings.

The client commissioned Rigby & Rigby to develop a strong and striking design, one that echoed the colourful visuals of its postcode whilst being a welcoming home. At the heart of the property is a large, open-plan living space, allowing for a truly social environment to host and entertain guests. The space includes a relaxed seating area, formal dining and a bar. The table seats eight people for large dinners and the discreet bespoke bar, which fits behind pocket doors, takes the room from day to night time use. By incorporating colours and contemporary furniture this unique property has a practical yet elegant approach.

At the rear of the property, a large terrace allows for alfresco dining in the heart of London. The bedroom areas were designed to provide a harmonious and calm environment. The use of bold colours and soft furnishings creates a playful and peaceful space. The Penthouse apartment flows from the common parts through to the main living spaces ensuring a tranquil space in one of London’s busiest entertainment districts. The open-plan living area is the perfect day-to-night space and blends both relaxation and entertaining functions into one room.

The design works well as it fundamentally fulfils every element of the brief including strong design features whilst ensuring a welcoming and considered feel. The design is original, it reflects the Edwardian heritage of the building and accentuates the original features whilst combining contemporary furniture and fittings. The furniture layout in the open-plan living space has been partitioned in the space to make individual areas flow seamlessly whilst retaining the grandeur of the space. The flexibility this space provides its occupant changes throughout the day, whether it be an early morning coffee to formal evening meal to relaxing in front of the TV or entertaining guests in the bar area.
