Rockbridge have been Shortlisted for Hotel Under 200 Rooms – The Americas Award in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2021.
Emeline, a 212-room luxury hotel located in Charleston, SC, opened July 1, 2020. Columbus, OH based Rockbridge, developer and designer, in collaboration with Makeready partnered with SWOON, the studio for interior design and DLR Group for architecture to reimagine the historic Circa 1852 building.
Inspired by Charleston’s rich culture, an assemblage of colours, textures and patterns reflecting the locale’s flora, fauna, natural landscape and port city roots adorn its interiors. The goal was to create a space with a sense of warmth and soulfulness that evokes the modern South embracing authenticity and character. Led by the spirit of the hotel’s “muse” Emeline, a portrait of true southern hospitality– every design touchpoint was considered through her viewpoint.
Emeline’s guest rooms and suites embody thoughtful luxury imbued with a sense of surprise and delight with an undercurrent of cool. Architectural elements like picture rails and detailed millwork nod to the neighbourhood’s history, while handsome menswear-inspired custom carpeting grounds the space. Guest room walls, drapery, and an array of upholstered furnishings are clad in a range of natural rich blues and greens. Custom cabinets and shelving pieces were crafted in walnut, cane and tambour to continue the modern take on historical elements. An art program including framed posters from the city’s iconic Spoleto Festival and custom still-life photographs featuring objects significant to the area add a clever, cultured element, while amenities like turntables, a curated vinyl collection and custom ceramic vanity accessories provide a layer of contemporary style.
The hotel encourages mingling amidst common areas with an intriguing collection of objects and musings throughout, reflective of the Emeline’s travels. The hotel includes cosy gathering spots, a charming retail niche, soulful restaurant and coffee shop, classic event spaces including a courtyard and greenhouse outdoor living spaces with a lush and gardenesque vibe for meditative musing. Its design is marked by an artisanal, timeless sensibility, featuring airy spaces filled with honest materials, statement lighting, custom furnishings and vintage pieces that create layers of experience, thoughtful surprises and a sense of place.
