The City of Dreams is a gaming and entertainment complex on the famous Cotai Strip Macau which incorporates three hotels (Crown, Hard Rock & Hyatt) and an interconnecting retail, entertaining and gaming complex. MAP was appointed by the client to resolve all public design areas in order to maintain the construction program. This included working on the podium shell and core, Retail Street, and the Hard Rock Hotel public areas and suites. For the Hard Rock Hotel suites, the client wanted an experience for its guests unlike any other they could find in Macau. MAP’s services included the provision of ‘rock star’ interiors for the suites. The interiors had to capture the Hard Rock brand ideals: fun and the party that doesn’t end. It also had to follow the ‘City of Dreams’ theme – flowing water, the Chinese symbol of good luck. While a very American brand, the hotel design had to appeal to a largely mainland Chinese clientele.

Each of the Hard Rock Hotel Rock Star suites has a series of sinuously interconnecting spaces that enhance the separate functions of the bedroom, bathroom, living areas and lobby. The furniture design and placement represents a logical extension of this theme. MAP’s vision for the suites was to create a stage for the high roller guests to act out their rock star fantasies. Each suite comes with a multi-purpose room with a selection of distractions such as: musical instruments, (drums, grand piano and guitars), golf and motor racing simulators, and the all-time favourite – a bucking bronco!

There are no corners in the Hard Rock suites. Every space and piece of furniture in the suites is curvaceous, seamlessly integrating with the base building architecture and the City of Dreams theme. The furniture has been custom designed for comfort and conversation – such as the living room ‘brontosaurus’ sofas. Materials include leather (a must for every rock star), animal print inspired cushions, cow hide upholstery, shag pile carpets and modern black lace curtains.
