Weldon shortlised for the Flooring Award

design et al are delighted to announce that Weldon have been shortlisted in the Flooring category of The International Product Design Awards 2015

Weldon recently worked with the Leconfield Property Group on this stunning project in central London.  The brief from their interior design team included specifications for flooring which would compliment a Grade 2 listed building and look like the floors had always been there. Weldon were commissioned to design and install hand made floors to the principal reception areas in the property.  Sourcing the finest quarter sawn, first grade reserve French oak was critical in the production of the giant herringbone parquet.  The development of the product is particularly interesting because of its uniqueness.  All components were individually hand crafted in their workshops, the edges rolled and surfaces hand sanded with slight undulation in order to replicate the natural movement and texture of an ageing floor.   Work involved the painstaking application of shellac finishes according to tradition techniques to each and every piece.  This antiquing patination process was undertaken in Weldons Nottinghamshire workshops before being delivered to London for fitting.

The installation was within a particularly challenging and industrious working environment due to the Leconfield team working hard to complete the project on time so all trades people and contractors had to work very closely to accommodate each other.  Trench heater positions were changed in the two front reception rooms which resulted in a last minute design change to the border details.  Careful scribing to joinery was needed on the split level library.  The stairs were a particular challenge as they had to be finished on site.  The herringbone was set against a two line border made and finished in the same way. Despite the combination of difficult access through a first floor window and the accelerated programme, the client was delighted with the completed Weldon floor.
