JW Architects Ltd have been shortlisted for Residential £2.5-5 Million (Property Value) Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020.
Wrap House is a contemporary family home designed and built to the highest standard. The form was developed in response to the context of the site and in collaboration with the client’s desire for a house which would precisely meet their requirements. The two opposing blocks of accommodation were designed around three axes of main circulation routes through the house.
A central atrium between the two blocks strengthens the main axis allowing light to penetrate deep into the property which connects the user with the outside in three different directions. The central atrium allows for one main referencing point which connects the other two main axes within the house and which all the main spaces feed off from. The protective wrap brings cohesion to the design by encapsulating the blocks, providing an architectural gesture to circulate the user to the front door and atrium space of the house as well as creating the architectural language for Wrap House.
JW Architects Ltd believe that the key aspect of this project is the atrium, a double height space with large areas of glass to bring in light and to enable the user to connect with the natural surroundings. The double height space features coloured glass fins, a unique stair design, a bridge and volume not normally found in many residential properties.
The design was developed to respond fully to the context of the heavily wooded site and where the massing elements make the most optimum use of light, space and volume as well as been sympathetic to the surroundings. The design is a hugely precise work of architecture which has many layers of complexity not initially obvious on first inspection. It far exceeds the brief from the clients. The setting, the design and spaces created all come together under the ‘Wrap’ as one design.
