Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)
I was born and raised in the beautiful Spa town of Wiesbaden, which is famed for its beauty and architecture and where my family still produce some of the best Riesling in Germany. My exposure to the renowned buildings of Wiesbaden ignited an early passion for design and architecture which has continued to nurture and develop throughout the years. My education at the University of Mainz and swift inauguration as a Member of the Institute of German Architects equipped Jutta with the knowledge and skill to channel her passion into a successful career. In 1999, I was selected to lead the re-design of what would become one of the Algarve’s first 5-star hotels. During my time in Portugal, I developed a deep love of the country and was inspired by its landscape and architecture. I decided to settle in Portugal, as I identified an opportunity and a location in which I felt compelled to bring my style and expertise. I now run my own practice, JSH Algarve, an innovative studio in the Algarve, with a team of twelve professionals. The company specialise in developing bespoke, luxury private homes, located predominantly in the “Golden Triangle” which includes Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo.
How would you describe your personal design style?
I would say a blend of contemporary with traditional touches. For example, I often use authentic
Portuguese tiles or antique features within my properties, as I also specialise in interior
architecture. I previously worked on a project where the design focus was very modern and minimalist,
however we imported a large antique golden door from Morocco which stood as a unique focal
point of the home. It is often a collaborative process whereby my clients and I work together to bring to life their vision. Whilst I have my signature style, it often varies to suit the client’s ideas as well.
Where does your design inspiration come from?
Predominantly my surroundings. Being so close to the sea has often inspired nautical themes in
terms of the interior architecture for some of my recent projects. I previously transformed two old fishing houses in Salema into beachfront homes. The interiors were bright and airy, in keeping with the seaside setting. I also previously mentioned using Portuguese tiles, which I often use on a feature wall in the bathrooms of some of my properties.
In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
Sustainability is becoming increasingly prevalent in the current climate. My designs incorporate
an eco-awareness without compromising the overall look of the property. My properties tend to
operate using renewable energy, however the solar panels and additional equipment are all
concealed, so there are no obvious generators/machinery. As an architectural studio, JSH Algarve strive to work with an eco-consciousness. They develop projects which show that luxury and green architecture can be seamlessly combined.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it
be?
I think it is important that there is a balanced focus between the interior and exterior spaces. The
surrounding environment always plays a fundamental role in JSH Algarve designs and given
Portugal’s year round warm weather – there is no question that the exterior design has to have
equal focus. Contemporary designs can sometimes be too open, whereas I like to design houses
which provide privacy whilst also providing scenic views.
How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
The International Design & Architecture awards are of growing importance to the landscape of
contemporary design. They provide a valuable opportunity to promote design within the industry
and to a greater public. Being shortlisted for an International Design & Architecture award is a
seal of quality for exceptional design and is crucial in highlighting design visionaries around the
world.
What projects are you currently working on?
I am currently working on a wide range of projects. I have recently recognised the potential of
two Faro town houses and have begun their transformation into unique and beautiful homes.
Two of these are to be completed in May, with the third to be completed later in the year. And we
have just now started on a very exciting project as well in faro, which will include 30 houses right
next to the ocean. I am also currently working on six beach houses which are to be completed this year. These are the perfect example of how the surrounding environment plays a fundamental role in my designs. Given Portugal’s beautiful weather, my design brief focused on maximising the cool open
spaces. In addition to this, we have been working on a number of supervillas in Quinta do Lago and the
surrounding areas, some of which are set to be complete this summer and some are set to begin
this year. We will also be beginning work on a boutique Hotel in vale do Lobo towards the end of
this year.
What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
I have a number of projects in the pipeline over the next twelve months, ranging from town
houses to super contemporary villas. My aim is to continue discovering new and innovative ways
to include eco-credentials within my designs.
