design et al are delighted to announce that KIMA Architecture & Interiors have been shortlisted for Residential £1-2.5 Million (Property by Value) Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2017.
KIMA was approached by a small team of property developers to assist with the refurbishment and modernization of two adjoining mews properties. The properties are very conveniently located and within walking distance of Hyde Park. Each home comprises of 3 double bedrooms (master bedrooms en-suite) and a large open plan kitchen/living/dining reception room. Despite the compact nature of mews properties KIMA maximised the available space by introducing as much as possible built-in storage and display. The stairs were designed to be elegant sculptural elements of the interiors scheme. The clients were naturally budget conscious and KIMA had to carefully specify finishes and fittings to stay within budget, but be enticing to the market at the same time. The clients had purchased the former office space with the view of re-developing it for residential use. The single building envelope was split into two interlocking apartments, each with three bedrooms. The budget was limited and therefore finishes and fittings had to be smart but economical.Because of the small footprint of the building envelope it was not possible to split the building vertically into two halves, each with a large reception area. The building was split in such a way that each apartment has the biggest part of a floor with an open plan kitchen/living/dining area. This gives each of the units a generous space despite its compact nature i.e. mews building. The vertical circulation in each apartment was emphasized and celebrated. Each apartment features a cantilevered stair with glass balustrade, that had to be specially engineered. The development respects and revels in its characterful mews setting.
