The Art House by Nina Maya Interiors

Nina Maya Interiors have been shortlist for Interior Design Scheme – Asia Pacific Award in The International Design and Architecture 2020.

The brief was to transform a generously proportioned but very dated Bellevue Hill mansion into a modern contemporary home fit for the clients growing family.

The brand-new residence showcases a masterful collection of rare antiques, modern art, the finest European furniture and local design highlights. NMI searched the globe to find stand out pieces to curate an enviable collection for the clients over a year period whilst the home was being renovated. Feature items were commissioned such as the brass bespoke sculptural piece that hangs over the stairwell and was handmade in Australia by locally renowned artist Oliver Tanner and the bespoke velvet dining chairs and charred oak dining table in the formal dining room custom designed by NMI.

A back to shell renovation/alteration of the dated 90’s residence conceived as a fresh canvas punctuated with bold sculptural elements to embody the clients unique style inspired by the modern glamour of designers like Kelly Wearstler. The existing house’s Mediterranean postmodern style was replaced by a contemporary lodge aesthetic influenced by the architecture of the likes of Anne Decker and selected celebrity homes.

Spiral stairs inside and outside flow to connect the 3 levels and their strong circular forms juxtapose and punctuate the rectilinear lines of the house. Extending and covering the terraces created better inside/outside connections/transitions and a new 20m crescent shaped pool and deck extend all the way across the rear yard, reflecting and embracing the scale of the home. The result is a residence that is unique within but responsive to its Sydney context, whilst enhancing the particular life and style of its owners.

The formal living room is a standout aspect of the home and features a marble clad fireplace flanked by a pair of matching vintage Vladimir Kagan lounges reupholstered in Dedar fabric and with custom ball cushions by Nina Maya Interiors.

In this project a bespoke brass artist was brought in to create the wall art in the entry. A master cabinet maker was used to create the custom dining table and dining chairs in the formal dining area and specialist stone mason was used to create the freestanding marble vanity in exotic Norwegian Rose in the guest powder room.
