Geri Designs have been shortlisted for Kitchen Over £50,000 Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020.
The design brief for this beach-side home was a clean and contemporary kitchen, that was also liveable for family life. Wanting a seaside family home, the clients asked Geri Designs to deliver a kitchen space that functioned as a social area, but also set a warm and welcoming atmosphere. In creating the clean design, Geri Designs chose a paired back, neutral colour scheme, and incorporated clean lines which also draw attention to the space that the kitchen has to offer. The designers achieved a calming effect with a range of textures, tones and materials, whilst also considering the functionality of the kitchen as a social space.
Not to distract from the views that the house provides, Geri Designs wanted to keep a neutral and light feel to the space. To do this, they chose neutral greys and whites for the cabinetry and furnishings. The poured concrete floor created a foundation to the colour scheme and blended quietly into the background of the design. The whitewashed beams draw the eye to the generous height of the kitchen, and creates a soft flow from the space to the ceiling.
The worktop by Silestone is a grey matt quartz that compliments the kitchen colour scheme, whilst offering a contrast to add depth. Implementing a colour scheme such as this risks the comforting atmosphere that is key in family homes, though Geri Designs balances this with warmth and depth to ensure this remains an area for the family to relax and socialise. The kitchen features a hob in the island to facilitate social cooking, and also offers another perspective from which to admire the views. Reclaimed wood was repurposed into a sliding door to the entrance of the kitchen – the warmth in the wood is used throughout the space including the console and dining table for a natural touch. This is reinforced by the red brick slips for a contrast to the neutral background.
