London based lighting designers, Bert|Frank, have secured their place on the Lighting – Lamp shortlist.
The Brief was to design a lamp that was built on yesterdays design values and principles but for today’s interiors. Inspired by early mid century design this lamp was made to last at least as long as its owner and designed to revolt against the throw away culture we live in today. We are lucky enough to have expertise in design and manufacturing under one roof and this helped us ensure that quality was not sacrificed in order for “ease of manufacture” or cost.
The lamp has a “doth of the cap” to its traditional roots especially in its brass colourways but also stands up brilliantly in contemporary interiors in the chrome and white.
You can tell that it has been designed and manufactured without compromise, from the solid steel base with a textured matt finish to the cast and then machined brass shades, everything is solid and purposeful.
The aesthetics and functionality stand up to the test too, the lamp is marvellously practical in both its single and double form with rotating arms and tilting shades.
Touch/ interaction points are also very special, the switch is solid and chunky with a good engineering “clunk” as feedback and the arm adjusters are solid brass that fit perfectly in the hand. But for all of the above, the lamp has a very soft and comforting feel about it.
The light produced through the silk lined perforated shade is warm and calming and the directional light practical but not harsh.
