design et al are thrilled to announce the successful shortlist for Casa Forma for the Living Space – UK Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2015. Situated in the heart of Kensington this imposing 3800 sq ft family property underwent a complete refurbishment with structural reconfiguring to achieve one coherent lateral apartment consisting of four bedroom suites, a large living area, state of the art media room and a private study. The spa area included a dry sauna, as well as a steam room and a Jacuzzi.
The scheme was to marry a modern shell with art deco inspiration which is prominent in Casa Forma’s work. Exquisite materials were used throughout for cladding walls, joinery and furniture, which ranged from the natural beauty of figured Japanese woods and natural stone finishes through to bespoke hand, worked chiselled mirrors sealed with gold leaf.
The property also benefits from spectacular views over landscaped gardens and across London making this a truly exceptional family home. The client requested a large drinks bar that could also showcase their crystal ornaments. Space was tight either end of the dining table so the idea of the original partition transformed to double up as a bar separating the dining and living room.
Inspiration was taken from the rare woods found in Japanese forests. The clients desired a natural wood that was truly unique in its appearance. The client wanted a bar with a quirky art deco look that is prominent in Casa Forma’s work. The art deco bar materials had to blend with the joinery finishes and deco look; bespoke handles were designed to give a statement to its cabinet doors. The bar also had to allow for a visual connection between the dining and living room.
