Nelson Design have been shortlisted for Residential £2.5-5 Million (Project Value) Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020.
Nelson Design were enlisted for the complete refurbishment and extension of a Grade II Listed house in Mayfair with the aim to maximise every inch of the property through extensions and use of internal space. The design brief for Nelson Design was to create a new way of living for a home that had been lived in by the family for ten years. The designers were required to bring the property up to date in terms of design and technology and to increase the floor area to the maximum possible.
The lower ground space became a large open living area leading onto a small terraced garden with a glass wall to bring colour into the rooms. The kitchen was to be moved from the lower ground floor to the upper ground floor to make it more central to the house, which was now over seven floors instead of six. Nelson Design were also asked to add a basement area which would then create a wine cellar, pool and sauna area.
All the joinery was made bespoke to Nelson Design’s very detailed design using interesting materials such as vellum for the study desk and fabric lined backs to cedar interiors of the dressing room. The children’s bathroom has a bath formed out of GRP and finished in a waterproof polished plaster with a large shower overhead.
Nelson Design believe that the key aspect of this project is the reconfiguration of the space, the new kitchen area transformed the way that the clients lived in their home. The design was so successful because each and every room is now functional, there is continuity throughout the entire house and each floor reveals its function immediately off the Georgian staircase.
