design et al are delighted to announce that Dorin & Coppel have been shortlisted for Living Space – UK Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2017.
Dorin & Coppel were commissioned to refurbish an exclusive 3-bedroom apartment in St John’s Wood, London. They provided full interior design works throughout including bespoke made joinery of a feature bar unit, bespoke fireplace, custom made mirrors, powder rooms, cloakrooms, kitchen, bedroom joinery and bespoke designed furniture throughout. The project duration was 7 months for both the design and build works.
A number of structural openings were required to create a huge open plan living room space which was previously four small rooms. The living space now features a wine bar & wine display cabinet, reading area and large informal living room with original and restored stained glass window feature. The dining room leading from the living space required further structural works to allow for a set of bifold doors to be constructed, which when open provides even more open plan living. The corridor leading to the bedrooms was entirely repositioned so that the full depth of the plan can be seen when entering the apartment from the front door. Bedrooms, ensuite bathrooms, dressing rooms and a study all required bespoke designed joinery items along with a totally new interior design look and feel.
Dorin & Coppel’s favourite aspect of the project was the unique full length of the apartment corridor (totally repositioned in plan) creating a dramatic view when at the entrance. They also liked the stonework to the TV unit and bar unit within the living space. The design turns what was a number of very small dark rooms into a completely transformed open plan modern living space. The light entering the building from all sides is able to infiltrate all rooms by the open plan nature of the design. The selection of subtle light finishes and use of a number of bespoke made fragmented mirrors to reflect light throughout the darkest areas of the plan worked well.
