Pippa Paton Design have been shortlisted for Kitchen Design over £100,000 Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2020.
Pippa Paton Design Limited were enlisted for a complete renovation of a Grade II listed Cotswold manor house, untouched for almost 50 years. The brief was to create a 21st century home in style and functionality, capable of hosting large family gatherings, whilst celebrating the building’s history and fabric and the owners’ love of wood.
The overall approach was to enhance the beauty of historic materials and vistas through design simplicity, introducing contemporary materials fused with textural layers alongside a softly neutral palette. White walls and neutral-toned furnishings provide a backdrop, with timber used for most joinery, furniture and flooring.
The open L-shaped kitchen, dining and sitting area, which Pippa Paton Design created from four separate rooms, has an impressive seven-metre, copper painted island embracing the room’s length. This incorporates triple Bora hobs and duel extractors and a glass topped, illuminated display trough set into the stainless steel and Corian worktop, with numerous storage units below.
Parallel to the island full-height olivewood units, the wood choice reflecting the family’s history, incorporates an appliance cupboard with foldaway doors, a double-width food storage cupboard, display niches and a ‘secret’ door to a shelf-lined pantry and secondary washdown area. The primary washdown is a separate station opposite the end of the island with Corian-sided sinks, 4-in-1 taps, and dishwasher and bins below and hanging for towels set into the left-hand panel to hide from view. A glassware cabinet with internal glass shelves has door panels made from two clear layers of acrylic separated by corrugated cardboard. These panels transmit light creating the effect of the glassware glowing when the cupboard is illuminated.
A large dining table sits by the fireplace, and an easily accessible breakfast cupboard with hideaway door contains coffee machine, toaster and other breakfast items, with adjacent window seat for additional seating. Other details include drawer inserts for utensils, cutlery, knives and spices, a space at the of the island for hanging chopping boards and displaying books, and conductive phone chargers in the island.
The original house encompassed a series of long dark narrow corridors, giving a feeling of never-ending walkways. The new spatial design, which included the removal of walls to ease circulation and vaulting of ceilings to add height, has created a sense of space and has given a sense of connection throughout. The overall design, with exposed historic fabric fused with contemporary materials and high-end fittings, has resulted in a truly unique family home.
