Congratulations to Danielle Campbell shortlisted for Living Space – Americas Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2019

design et al are delighted to announce that Danielle Campbell has been shortlisted for Living Space – Americas Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2019

Danielle Campbell’s clients had recently retired and moved back to Canada from Hong Kong to create their dream home. They approached Danielle Campbell after purchasing a tired property with a compartmentalised floor plan and tasked them with improving the flow throughout both levels, adding space to the main floor and creating a second level to suit the couple and their daughter who visits occasionally from college. For inspiration Danielle Campbell took cues from existing client artwork that was fresh and colourful, and paired that with calm and detailed elements to mirror the client’s personalities.

The new home was to have maximised natural light, a contemporary aesthetic with natural elements and soft colour palette enhanced by punchy accents. The clients also wanted a large kitchen, open main level layout and unique fireplace design. The client frequently uses their backyard so wanted an outdoor entertaining space that felt like an extension of their home indoors. Upstairs, the client requested a large master bathroom and walk-in closet. Cathedral ceilings within the addition give the illusion of more space and allowed for large windows and a lot of natural light.

The home itself in a 1970s developer neighbourhood where the homes are of similar styling with minor variations on colour and materials. The interior layouts also correspond to standardised planning. When creating, Danielle Campbell took into consideration layout and exterior options that would set their home apart from the norm but not look out of place. With Canada’s winter months being long and dark, the rear addition was modelled to add height and interest to the back yard along with allow maximum window space for interior light.

An outdoor space with large patio was created, with a sitting area, dining space, dual purpose knee wall for seating + lighting and a swing in tree for reading. Creating an oasis for the client during the short summer months. These unique elements allow Danielle Campbell’s renovation to stand out based on function and aesthetic, but the material selections kept it integrated within the existing environment.
