Dawson Design Associates, Inc. have been shortlisted for Hotel Suite – Global Award in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2020
In a City that thrives on fantasy, the entry doors of the Mondrian are 30’ tall. Philippe Starck’s iconic spin on Alice in Wonderland, that opened its doors in 1996 was worn and losing its magic. DDA was commissioned to refresh and evolve this beloved Hollywood masterpiece in the spring of 2018 after meeting with the Global Brand design in Milan to learn more about their goals and desire to continue the legacy of the hotels iconic design. The team was to both re-imagine and evolve the hotel’s classical fusion of fantasy and modern, while continuing the whimsical edge that the hotel was renowned for. The scope given was to redesign the lobby the 236 guestrooms, Penthouse and Sky Loft Suites, corridor.
For inspiration, the US and London teams dove deeply into the children book for ideas that could be re-interpreted and made more representative of today’s lifestyle. A modern-day Alice lost in ‘La La Land’. Playfully surreal, every detail was to be relevant and intentional both intellectually and creatively. Shape was used as a suggestion as opposed to a constant, exemplified through the Cuizia Floor lamp and Cappellini lounge chair and table inspired by the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. DDA explored scale and distortion through the use of huge iridescent dragonfly wings designed by JCAA and applied to existing mirrored walls and at the same time reflecting the oversized playfully brilliant blue articulated light shades. Behind the bed, the ‘Rabbit Hole’ wall, surreally framed with light. A translucent chair designed by Phillip Starck serves as a tribute.
Los Angeles, especially West Hollywood, is filled with both illusion and delusion. It is easy to get lost in the fantasy; it is easy to lose oneself. The seduction and elegance reflects the glamour and the loss of innocence Alice faces. The monsters representative in the Queen of Hearts and the modern day villains. The attraction of drugs and the side effects. The story still feels very relevant in our society.
