design et al are delighted to announce that de Loren & Associates have been shortlisted for Luxury Residence – Global Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020.
Located in West Los Angeles alongside remarkable architectural projects like The Getty Center, the curved design of Sky Lane follows the natural curvature provided by the steep hillside of the Brentwood hills. The house steps down with the hillside and is part of the existing landscape rather than an imposed structure on the hillside.
Unlike any other home in Los Angeles, visitors enter Sky Lane through its’ roof. Sky Lane has a unique dynamic facade that wraps around the residence and provides it with a look like no other. The facade is composed of an exterior skeleton that is offset from the building and offers complex curvature to the residence. The design of the pool went hand in hand with the design of the house, following the dynamic curvature, allowing the pool to wrap around the terrace and encompass every view available. The 75-foot infinity pool offers a jacuzzi, Baja and a swim-up bar.
The interior of the property features an extensive wine cellar, movie theatre, gym & spa, seven large bedrooms including a beautiful master bedroom, multiple waterfalls, entertainment room, office, zen garden, and a 300-square-foot living green wall. The home is replete with wellness amenities, including DARWIN smart home technology, which allows residents to monitor things like air and water quality and control the lighting for mood.
This site was un-buildable for over 50 years. Many contractors and engineers tried to build on this hillside but were not able to come up with a design solution. Sky Lane’s design works so well because of the clever engineering and complex design process that went into completing the overall look of the house. The distinct curvature of its facade drew inspiration from luxury yachts and imbues the entire residence with a feeling of dynamic movement.
de Loren & Associates favorite feature of Sky Lane has to be the unique, 75-foot, infinity pool offering exceptional views of Los Angeles. Overlooking the Getty Museum, Downtown Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean all from one pool is extremely unique. There is also two bars and a curved sculptural wall in the living room, all custom made to fit the overall aesthetic of Sky Lane and to accentuate its curves. These sculptures are handmade by Japanese master craftsman Toshi Kawabata and made of solid walnut wood.
