design et al are delighted to announce that Design by Uber have been shortlisted for City Space (Apartment/Penthouse) Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2019.
Design by UBER were commissioned to transform the newly constructed shell of a three-bedroom apartment space into a fully designed, specified and furnished home which was ready to move in to. The property within which the apartment is situated in a beautiful example of Victorian architecture with a multitude of original features throughout. Originally built in 1861, the building’s recent history saw it used as commercial premises and only latterly has it been redeveloped into a premier complex of seven apartments.
A key element of the brief was to seamlessly meld the contemporary and the classic with contemporary styling and design, proposed to sympathetically enhance and complement the heritage and precedent character of the building. A further part of the brief required the apartment to be designed as a social space in which to relax and entertain friends, whilst the overall tone was to be of understated luxury with a distinctly masculine flavour.
Design by UBER’s involvement in the project began when the redevelopment of the building was still in the construction phase. This enabled the team to work with the architect’s plans to influence certain elements of the space planning. To facilitate the sociable space the client desired, the main living and dining space is open plan and, with light flooding in from four arched period windows, it allowed rich, luxurious tones to be used without feeling over-powering. Design by UBER chose atmospheric colour ways and bronze finishes to underpin the design and encapsulate the masculine feel. As you journey through the space the design sees subtle changes in tone, for example, the dining area with an ebonised oak and dark bronze oval table and drop pendant lights adorned with cobalt blue silk shades offers a more overtly vivacious atmosphere which lends itself perfectly to entertaining.
Design by UBER crafted a design aesthetic which allows every room in the apartment to have its own unique identity, yet each space complements the next in a perfect symbiosis of tone and style. Working with a wide range of fabrics and textures throughout the property we were able to add depth and warmth to the scheme, ensuring that luxury was never promoted at the expense of comfort. A cinema room is also set on a lower level and is designed in rich purple tones ensuring a dark and atmospheric space. The intention in this room was to create an enclave which offers the epitome of refined relaxation. Crittal style doors separate the space whilst ensuring it does not feel disconnected from the main living areas.
The design is sympathetically crafted to allow for contemporary living whilst embracing and complementing the historic precedent of the building. The thoughtful approach to the design has resulted in a scheme which offers truly timeless elegance. Deliberately crafted with a base palette of neutral tones subsequently overlaid with rich accent colours ensures a luxurious, boutique look which can easily be updated in the fullness of time.
