Congratulations to Design Rocks shortlisted for Living Space – Europe in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2018

design et al are delighted to announce that Design Rocks  have been shortlisted for Living Space – Europe Award within The International Design and Architecture Awards 2018.

Loft Cherdak is a traditional Russian Gostinuy, but with a beautiful modern twist. Design Rocks were brought in to completely transform this industrial duplex loft space into a cosy modern space, with the potential to adapt as the client’s family grows.

The clients had a specific design brief in mind they wanted a living room with a wood-burning fireplace, an area for entertaining and plenty of storage space. Design Rocks had to plan and conceptualize in order to meet all the client’s needs in such a small space, instead of a traditional wood burning fireplace Design Rocks sourced a modern version that appears to float off the floor, secured into place by a heavy black flume. Perfectly complementing the black steel girders supporting the floor to ceiling windows in the dining area.

Design Rocks used a reduced colour palete throughout the apartment to make the space appear much larger than it is. The open plan kitchen was designed in all black, perfectly camouflaged in the black concrete wall using accents of Corten to identify the separate the space. The clients love to entertain and a bar area for them to do this was high on their list of requirements, Design Rocks used a large dining table, placing it underneath the full height windows so no to stifle the overall living space.

Although the clients wanted a cosy space, they were also aware that the property was in an industrial building and didn’t want to isolate the property from the overall feel of the surroundings.  To achieve this Design Rocks used a mix of traditionally industrial materials including Steel, concrete and different types of hard wood.

This gave the designers the perfect opportunity to integrate storage solutions into the property, using every inch of space without compromising on floor space. The back wall in the main living area became the perfect place for the clients to showcase trinkets collected over the years punctuated with hidden storage compartments. The storage solutions are continued in the entrance to the property, concealed behind the wooden walls is a large wardrobe, the stairs leading up to the main living area are also all sliding storage compartments and a large hidden closet the height of the stairs for the storage of sports equipment.
