DESIGNER IN PROFILE: IVAN ERDEVICKI

Following his IY&A Awards shortlist success, Ivan Erdevicki, President of Ivan Erdevicki Naval Architecture & Yacht Design Inc., reveals his design approach, latest projects and top tips for relaxation…

. What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms?

In my opinion, design is influenced by market requirements and is moving towards implementing the newest technology and “green” solutions, packed in minimalistic styling with clean lines and sculpture shaped surfaces. There is a strong tendency for practical innovations in new design, be it in styling, ergonomics, performance, etc. In general, people seem to be more open lately to new solutions for custom yachts.

. What projects are you currently working on?

We have several very different projects on the drawing board at the moment. These include 118 meter and 86 meter motor yachts with unique design features never seen before in the yachting industry. We also have a 40 meter modern-classic concept design motor yacht in development with a well-known American ship yard, a 61 ft custom ketch sailing yacht for an American client, a 65 ft modern-classic custom motor yacht and a 45 ft custom sailing yacht for a European client. In addition to this, we are constantly busy with special commercial projects ranging from 33 ft to 99 meters in length.

. A designer’s work is so diverse – how do you manage to hold down a career and a life?

It is important that you are surrounded by things that you love: family, life and work. Then it is easy – you just sleep less!

. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2013 and beyond.

1.)           Show a true talent; be a leader not a follower in design, create new solutions and be inventive.

2.)           Be familiar with up to date technology. Practice and take advantage of the latest materials, technical solutions and products.

3.)           Never forget basics: practicality, safety, reliability…

4.)           Approach design with love and passion.

5.)           Be informed about industry.

. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

Be realistic with design.

. How important are The International Yacht and Aviation Awards as recognition of talent and achievement?

Quite important because they create impartial, friendly competition within an objective market, allowing for feedback on current designs and reflecting the true market trends.

. How do you relax?

Sailing, swimming, walking amongst nature and dining out.

. What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

We are passionate about our business. Our goal for the next year is to create the opportunity to build the ICON ER175 high speed yacht concept design (shortlisted for the Concept Design over 50 Metres Awards in the IY&A Awards 2013) and get involved in even more challenging projects with high quality clients where we can truly show our best talent and knowledge.
