Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)
I received a BA Hons degree in printed and woven textiles from SIAD before starting my career at Designers Guild. Following this position I joined interiors company, Cameron Broom in London and worked on many amazing projects whilst furthering my education studying interior design with the KLC school of design. In 2006 I launched Suffolk based Rendall & Wright with my business partner Helen Wright. During the past 14 years we have developed our company and had the privilege to work on many historical restorations, new developments, hotels, spas and yachts.

How would you describe your personal design style?
Simple, elegant and functional. I always have the building’s fabric and surroundings in mind. The interior should serve and enhance the story of the property and the people who use it.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
I look to the building and its surrounding environment for inspiration. Shapes and materials found within the architecture and the surrounding natural location tend to be the starting point for all my designs. I love colour and the brilliance of clashing tones which are found so effortlessly in the natural environment.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
Rather than following a fashionable theme I think people are being braver with their interiors. Expressing their own style, experimenting with colour and having more fun! Life shouldn’t be too serious and nor should the environments we live in.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2020 and beyond.
Environmental sustainability
Versatility
Accessibility
Functionality
Wellbeing

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
A space should work for you, deliver functionally, meet all requirements and also look and feel wonderful. Start with form and function and once the practicalities are met you can enjoy dressing them.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
Celebrating and promoting the profession of interior design and architecture is hugely important. Our built and natural environment has an enormous impact on all our lives. To share projects, knowledge and creativity internationally enables us to understand each other and develop ourselves further.

What projects are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on a renovation and extension of a Grade II listed Old Hall in Suffolk, an oak framed 5 bedroom newbuild, the renovation of a 6 bedroom Suffolk farmhouse and a boutique Hotel & Spa.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
To enjoy the varied and exciting projects we are currently working on. To support the President of the BIID, Lester Bennett as President Elect whilst continuing working with our student members.
