SKIN have been shortlisted for Luxury Residence – Americas in the The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020.
Ebony and Ivory is a country home in the lakeside village of New Buffalo, Michigan that has a modern, clean line look, accompanied by a perfect storm of sophistication and homeliness.
As this is a second home to the client, mirroring the interior with the tranquillity of the countryside and lake was essential. SKIN, named after their passion for layers and diversity, knew that to execute such a brief, materials selection would be key to create such necessary natural textures. Inspired by Axel Vervoordt Interiors, SKIN wanted to bring these natural textures inside and keep the lines clean. Indeed, the mixing of metals, marbles, stones, wood and parchment truly serve as the crux of the design’s success. Warm rugs, rich fabrics and the layering of a few accessories, accompanied with the stunning custom bookcase designed by SKIN, makes the space feel complete. Yet importantly, by not over styling the space, and thus avoiding a cluttered feel, the design is able to further channel the peaceful and contemplative feel of its lakeside surroundings.
In addition to this, the clients wanted the interiors to play off their art collection, with works of art by M Quan, Todd Williamson and Miguel Osuna gracing the walls. In order to achieve this, SKIN envisioned the home to be a play in black and white, contrasting perfectly with these key pieces. Indeed, in combination with the natural textures, such a natural palette allows the artwork to speak. What further allows the contrast element within the space to work so well, is that the home is flooded with light, despite being surrounded by trees.
The result is a light and airy feeling space, which with the contrasting art pieces and natural colours/textures, creates a layered, serene look. A brief gorgeously executed by SKIN.
