Congratulations to Elliot James who have been shortlisted for Luxury Residence – Asia Pacific Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2019

design et al are delighted to announce that Elliot James have been shortlisted for Luxury Residence – Asia Pacific Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2019.

This Elliot James apartment was designed to be a relaxing environment, with a funky, edgy style, that would cater for a family to relax in and enjoy each other’s company; whilst also allowing for larger gatherings to congregate. Therefore, a very informal, welcoming atmosphere with abundant seating was created. The style for the apartment is bold, but simple. This style has been achieved through the use of a clean, monochrome palette throughout the apartment which reflects the targeted simplicity; in addition to acting as a calm backdrop to the bold shapes, bespoke furniture and exciting commissioned artwork throughout.

Every room was given an element of softness through the incorporation of cushions and upholstery. The apartment was designed to create a home for the family to grow into. For the daughter’s room, Elliot James designed a mature base from which personalisation could evolve through artwork, soft items and accessories. For the son’s room, a playful area was formed through the window seat and bike illustration fabrics on the blinds; as well as a focused desk area with shelves for storing gaming consoles. For the master bedroom, it was decided the bed would be a dominant feature of the room, with the décor of the room to be bold but comfortable. Some of the ways in which this was created was through the wrapped headboard, low reading lighting and a window daybed.

A favourite and key aspect of this apartment is the open plan living room come dining room. The dramatic custom designed lighting, customised seating and the commissioned artwork contribute to continuing the calm, inviting and comfortable environment; whilst also offering a versatile space to entertain guests. The use of larger proportions in the space and the injection of a number of statement pieces helped to zone the areas and give them their own room to breathe, which sustained the informal and well-balanced proportions of the space. In addition, carefully chosen injections of colour draw the eye to the various focal points, with every area having its own hero piece, whether it be the customised chairs, commission graffiti art pieces or sculptures. Where large shapes dominate a space, they have been finished in a shade of black or white, so as to not draw the eye away from the selected colourful objects.
