Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Boston by Bill Rooney Studio, Inc.

Bill Rooney Studio, Inc. shortlisted for Hotel Suite – Global Award in The International Hotel & Property Awards 2020.

Applying a fresh approach to the historic context of Boston and New England, The Four Seasons One Dalton was designed for Carpenter & Co. by Bill Rooney Studio. Choosing the materiality of the interiors to blend contextually with Boston in a subtle and seamless manner, the 214 room New Build Hotel which opened June 2019, combines the timeless essence of Boston with a modern approach to hospitality design. The owner mandate was for Bill Rooney Studio to make the guestrooms “a new luxury offering for Boston rooted in context of place”.

The hotel portion of the project occupies the first 21 floors of the property, and includes executive suites, one-bedroom suites, two-bedroom speciality suites, and a presidential suite. Bill Rooney Studio embraced the unique project site, using the soft triangular geometry of the building as a key element in the guestroom planning.  Designed to react to this unique situation, all rooms are accessed from a single loaded corridor affording every room a remarkable view. Bill Rooney Studio crafted the room architecture to maximise window light and break away the boundaries that would otherwise impede view.  A well-placed marble wall and retractable partitioning to that wall achieves a flexible room that is expansive and filled with light. The plan elements and operable partitions expand the visual space available to the guest and allows the guest the option of choice; a fully open bath experience or enclosed.

The personality of the Hotel Suite is derived from a modern and refined New England material palette. Pattern, texture, and form further define the experience by Bill Rooney Studio’s use of soothing tones, light grey stone surfaces, fluting, Wilton style wool carpet in a windowpane pattern, and a well-balanced blend of wallcovering surfaces consisting of herringbone, patterned textile, linen, and raffia textures. Integrating the context of the location with the suite, abstract and photographic modern art from New England artists James Stroud and Alexander Coster Scott can be found within the guest room. Bill Rooney Studio’s subtle reference to iconic and regional elements such as a raised panel ebonized mahogany front door, polished mahogany case goods, and federal style inspired nickel-plated cabinet hardware blend to make a uniquely modern experience rooted to one of America’s most historic cities.
