Hunters Hill House by Alexandra Kidd Design

Alexandra Kidd Design have been shortlisted for Interior Design Scheme Asia Pacific Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2020.

Hunters Hill House II was a complete inside and out renovation, with every aspect reconsidered to suit the next phase of the clients’ life. Alexandra Kidd Design set out to balance the casual and formal spaces, so every inhabitant had a dedicated space to feel welcome.  Architecturally, there were existing grand atriums, skylights and voids – yet the interiors felt dark and closed off. They introduced frame-less glass bi-fold doors to all main living areas which instantly modernised the spaces and dramatically improved the quality of light and air.

The curved architectural elements were structural, so by enhancing them, rather than fighting them, the new custom elements became more harmonious within the existing structure. The designers were conscious of unnecessarily replacing existing elements but rather chose to re-imagine or re-finish wherever possible.

As the living area is very large and open, they installed linear curved decorative screens to cocoon the space, adding a sense of intimacy without compromising on light and airflow. The spiral stairs to the roof terrace received a re-fresh to tie into the new palette. The old carpeted treads were re-finished with timber and installed a new frameless glass balustrade.

Appreciating form and function, they added an operable skylight to the master ensuite, which is as beautiful as it is practical. By beginning with how the clients wished to live and how they desired to feel when walking through the front door – rather than focusing on interior trends – they created a timeless home that truly nurtures its inhabitants. Alexandra Kidd Designs worked closely with the clients to understand their personal style and daily rituals, and designed bespoke elements tailored exactly to how they live, such as the joinery to showcase their extensive wine collection and a multifunctional entertaining room to house everything from Mahjong to movie nights.

In an urban Sydney setting, extending the internal boundary seamlessly to the great outdoors, and bringing the outside in, is the pinnacle in achieving a relaxed, harmonious lifestyle. The extensive landscaping renovation completed by ‘Outdoor Establishments’ created an effortless and inviting indoor/outdoor connection, establishing a true extension of the living areas and achieving the ultimate sense of space.
