The Dickson Design Group have been shortlisted for Living Space – Canada Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2020.
The Dickson Design Group were tasked with a first floor renovation of a Canadian home, with the main aim of opening up the small dark rooms to create an inviting, family friendly space. With a calm and primarily monochromatic design scheme, the designers were able to keep the space light and airy, perfect for family living.
A young family with three growing boys was in desperate need of a first floor reorganisation and renovation. The original space had a formal living room, separate formal dining room and a medium sized combined kitchen and family room. The dark, closed rooms were not working for the family, and so The Dickson Design Group reinvented the area to be both practical for the family and welcoming to their guests.
The Dickson Design Group gutted the entirety of the first floor including a structural wall and adding in large recessed beams across the width of the space. This was the biggest challenge the designers faced; removing the structural walls meant the back wall of the house was stabilised by installing a large steel box, where a beautiful new back door is placed. By moving the dining room to the front of the house, which was the old living room, they were able to create an open concept space with a large kitchen and large living room. The kitchen was relocated and all new millwork with a large 4’x10′ island was incorporated to oppose the dated and beat up cabinets that were in the old kitchen area.
One of the client’s must haves was to have a bar area, which The Dickson Design Group incorporated into the space which separated the kitchen from the living area. The bronzed glass back-splash of the bar become one of the designer’s favourite aspects in the project. The living room received a new gas fireplace encased in a marble surround, and functional, decorative millwork was added around the fireplace. All new furniture was required to finish the beautiful space.
