Nelson Design have been shortlisted for Regeneration/Restoration Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020.
This project involved the complete refurbishment and change of use to out buildings for an existing client. The brief for Nelson Design was to create an Alfresco dining area and outdoor kitchen from the unused outbuildings and green house, and expanding the family use of the exterior; backing onto a converted building as a games room, and close to the tennis court to give good connection between the outside areas. Nelson Design’s favourite aspect of this project was seeing the transformation from what was rather tumble-down buildings into a loved and used area by the clients.
The brick wall at the back of the kitchen area was not in great condition, with different brick stocks and many crumbling, a dual purpose solution of reclaimed timber was decided on one to mask the bricks and second to give a material difference and a striking contrast whilst defining the area well. The client wanted the bar to feel industrial and resistant to the elements, so a zinc worktop was chosen with industrial exterior wall lights.
The Greenhouse is fairly long and narrow and was accessed by a single door next to the kitchen, Nelson Design decided to open up the front middle section to give a more Alfresco feel and easier access. The glazed roof needed to be lifted to give enough headroom. To assist with heat gain electrically opening roof lights were integrated and solar reflective blinds. A provision was made to be able to hang curtains, made up in an outdoor fabric, so that the entrance can be closed off on more chilly evenings. The rear wall brickwork was painted in a dark grey to be more dramatic. With a long table all laid out with large candle lanterns and brimming vases with fresh cut flowers from the garden it is a wonderful space to dine in.
Nelson Design believe that the design works so well because the outdoor kitchen is well connected to the greenhouse dining area which we opened up the front of to give the Alfresco feel but also allows weather protection for chillier nights and if there is some light rain.
