Lang & Schwander, LLC have been shortlisted for Hotel Under 200 Rooms – The Americas Award in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2020
The first full service, 5-star Hyatt property in Central America, located in the centre of Guatemala City, in Zona 10, a neighbourhood known for its restaurants and nightlife. The hotel features 133 guestrooms, a fine dining restaurant, a rooftop tapas restaurant, and a cocktail bar. As a lifestyle brand, Hyatt Centric is rooted in the mentality that authentic local experiences are the key to successful travel, both in business and in pleasure. Part of the challenge of Hyatt Centric Guatemala was maintaining the authenticity of the local experience, capturing the old-world charm often found in Latin America while seamlessly merging with the fast-paced nature of the growing city.
Upon entering the hotel you are welcomed by a magnificent multi-story woven sculpture, whose brightly coloured rope is a deconstruction of the handwoven blankets Guatemala is known for. In fact, the colours and intricate geometric patterns used by the traditional weavers are found all throughout the hotel, not only as art on display but also within wallcoverings, furnishings, fabrics and rugs. The check in experience is another introduction to a Guatemala staple – reclaimed weathered doors from Antigua (the historic town located where the previous capital was buried in volcanic ashes) create the backdrop to the reception desks. This too becomes a theme to the hotel, appearing in millwork, art and furniture within public space and guestrooms. Inspired by the local marketplaces, the hotel’s Café is another nod to the distinct cultural influences of the area. With a mix of rustic materials, decorative repurposed wood carton shelves, as well as the panels made from coffee bags, the café has a distinctly welcoming feeling that caters to travellers and locals alike.
The project uses a mix of rustic materials and local fabrics directly from the area. There was a concerted effort to not only seamlessly integrate with the local textures and flavours, but also incorporate authentic items as much as possible into the design, Lang and Schwander did their best to pair modern conveniences with local handiwork.
design et al only work with the world’s leading designers.
