Rendall & Wright have been shortlisted for Interior Design Scheme – UK Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020.
Rendall & Wright were enlisted to redevelop and renovate an old Victorian girls boarding schoolhouse and its garden overlooking the sea. The brief for Latimer House was to reconfigure the existing layout to create a bright, family living space and to make the most of its sea view.
The historical features and integrity of the building were maintained throughout the redevelopment, whilst also ensuring the property is efficient and serves a modern lifestyle. Rendall & Wright were also required to sympathetically extend the property to provide an additional bedroom suite and three additional ensuite bathrooms. It was vital that the designers pay special attention to ensure the materials and methods used enhanced the original building.
The clients request several aspects such as a quiet day room to be created for reading and watching the ocean; a large kitchen/dining and entertaining space; cosy evening spaces for watching films with family; a games room but most of all a calm restful home.
The new layout of the property enables the sea to be seen from almost all living spaces. The natural light floods throughout the accommodation and changes the interior depending on the time of the day. The interior has a strong connection to the natural environment beyond its walls. The sea view from all areas provides a sense of calm and quiet peacefulness to the interior scheme.
One of the designers’ favourite aspects of this project was uncovering and restoring the beautiful stain glass windows and fireplaces, some of which had been hidden from view for years. The building has an historical importance within the town of Felixstowe, restoring it has not only been beneficial to the local community but a true pleasure for Rendall & Wright.
