Margot Tsim have been shortlisted for Living Space – London Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2021.
The Hong Kong-born designer, Margot Tsim, recently completed a comprehensive renovation of a Georgian townhouse in Little Venice, with views of the Regent’s Canal. In a collaborative effort with its imaginative owners, who wanted to create a gallery feel in the living areas, Margot conceived schemes defined by soft curves, bold silhouettes and a monochrome palette punctuated with pops of colour. Exposed filament lamps by Buster + Punch and raw brickwork introduce a gently industrial edge, while lighting by Cameron Design House adds a fluid, contemporary note to the property.
Having opened the house up and created a dramatic double height space with expansive garden views, Margot Tsim turned to texture and shape to add a sense of anchoring definition. A black marble fireplace provides a natural focus in the living room, juxtaposed by the soft shapes of the sofas and chandeliers. Elsewhere, the owners’ sense of fun and passion for hosting is reflected in an informal walnut-topped bar area, with bespoke cabinetry finished in Farrow & Ball’s Stiffkey Blue. Throughout, schemes have been given room to breathe, resulting in an inviting yet sculptural feel.
A blend of monochromes, off-whites and midnight blues prevails throughout, warmed by wood and aged metal elements, evident in the dark oak kitchen, complemented by a splashback in blue herringbone from Ann Sacks. The basement level was partially excavated to accommodate the kitchen and offer a seamless transition between inside and out. Custom-made additions throughout, conceived by Margot Tsim, and crafted by British and European furniture makers, lend the house its unique air: bespoke bookshelves feature warm backlighting, the dining area banquette is upholstered in blue leather, and in the master bedroom, two low-slung pendants by Bert Frank create a delicate frame for a wool upholstered bed.
