Nayara Tented Camp by Luxury Frontiers

Luxury Frontiers have been Shortlisted for Hotel Under 50 Rooms – The Americas Award in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2021.

Located in the Arenal Volcano National Park, the year-round Nayara Tented Camp is one of the first luxury camps in Central America and boasts an environmentally low-impact yet high-touch design which fully immerses guests in the majestic rainforest. The 25 air-conditioned accommodations, each generously sized at 1,496 square feet, have been built at a higher altitude on the undulating hillsides to invite in unobstructed views of the spectacular volcano.

The client’s brief was to create a luxury tented experience within a Costa Rican context to optimize a genuine sense of place as well as foster a sense of adventure. Luxury evident in every detail, Nayara Resorts and Luxury Frontiers collaborated for three years to design a light-on-earth floating structure, achieving the highest level of luxury and experiential accommodation. Efforts included the reforesting of the surrounding area to further nurture Nayara’s own sloth sanctuary, rearming Nayara Tented Camp’s leadership in the ever-growing experiential travel movement and elevating Costa Rica’s adventure and nature-based hospitality landscape.

The outdoors were blended with the indoors through the architecture and interiors. The tent was designed in a way that large openings and windows allow for natural vegetation to be part of the guest experience as well as bring in views of the Arenal Volcano (every care was taken in positioning each unit to get a full view of the volcano). Generous outdoor decking and living areas celebrate the natural beauty unique to Costa Rica.

While the concept of the tented camp is not native to Costa Rica, a number of contextual palettes celebrate its colours found in both its natural environment and its cultural context. All 8,000 meters of canvas used for the accommodation tents have been custom coloured, including canvas used for the exterior, inspired by tree bark colours to seamlessly blend the tents in with the surrounding forest. General colour hues around the interior were taken from the beautiful rainbow eucalyptus tree and the ox wagon wheel was used to inform the stylistic and artistic lines of the carved details.
