design et al are delighted to announce that Major Interiors has been shortlisted for Bedroom Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2019.
Major Interiors Inc. worked in tandem with a team of consultants to convert an early 20th-century Vancouver Character Home into a modern 21st-century luxury home.
The client purchased an early 20th-century character home surrounded by mature trees. They wanted to preserve a part of Vancouver’s history and to create a home as part of their legacy for future generations. The owner chose to undertake the gruelling task to renovate, expand the home, and to integrate the expanded structure within the natural surrounding elements.
As an avid traveller, the client had a desire to incorporate elements of both old-world antiquity and clean-lined modern living. In creating the interior aesthetic, Major Interiors took inspiration from the existing home, while refining the essence of the client’s desires.
The foyer drew inspiration from Italian Renaissance ceilings. Major Interiors distilled the aura into its fundamental elements of a barrel-vaulted ceiling framed with carefully selected mouldings to evoke the emotions of antiquity. Intricate fresco ceiling paintings were replaced with delicate shimmering silver leaf applique combined with a sculptural artisan glass custom light fixture suspended over an intricate mosaic floor.
While the foyer, living, and dining room create the formal entertaining areas of the home, the true heart of the home lies in the kitchen and family room where there is a delicate blend of traditional details balanced with contemporary elements to reflect the modern lifestyle of the client and their family. A modern kitchen with a sculptural island anchors the space.
A pair of French doors with large sidelights provides access to a private balcony and creates a larger sense of space. Flanking the bedroom, a walk-in closet with a tinted glass top island showcases the owner’s wardrobe accessories.
The basement’s 11-foot high ceilings give the lower level a sense of airiness. It is centred on both casual group entertainment and personal wellness. A large recreation room incorporates a wet bar, wine wall, large screen television, and room for a billiard table to sufficiently accommodate large groups with varying activities. Immediately adjacent is a tiered theatre room with capacity for more than 8 people. An exercise room is located adjacent to the sunken patio and the spa-room, complete with steam- & dry-saunas, are located within proximity.
