design et al are delighted to announce that Mar Silver has been shortlisted for City Space (Apartment/Penthouse) Global Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2019.

2 Story Penthouse in Chelsea District NYC with Rooftop Terrace

Mar Silver was commissioned to completely recreate a 1 1/2 bedroom loft in the Chelsea district of New York City. Mar Silver was charged with making the space more intimate whilst at the same time opening up the space to make it appear larger.

The penthouse was played out over 2 stories and is very tall and narrow, this meant there was only room for one bedroom above the living space, which also has a tight kitchen area adjacent. To enlarge these spaces, Mar Silver added a vertical wall that became a soft separation between the living space and kitchen. By adding this wall it allowed for an enlarged kitchen and master suite to be installed.

The entryway was completely made over to take advantage of the spectacular Hudson River views by removing the portico and opening up the entire foyer. Mar Silver also created a unique gallery of ancient artefacts complete with a sitting nook to allow another view of the sprawling Hudson River.

Mar Silver loved how the entire penthouse was transformed and became a completely different space. It had a sense of intimacy but with a much brighter and open feel to give the illusion that is was a larger space than it actually was.  When designing the space, Mar Silver relied on the views of Manhattan and the outdoors to incorporate it into the space.

The design worked so well because Mar Silver was able to utilise this incredible penthouse to capture more character and light and transform a tight Manhattan apartment into a stunning penthouse duplex.
