This home reflects a successful collaborative approach with trusting homeowners who built a talented design team between the architects, interior designers, contractors, and landscape architects. There was no budget and no hard deadlines allowing each design detail and decision to be studied and several opportunities considered before any decision was made. The client’s asked for a home that looked as though it has always been a part of the island landscape. Martha’s Vineyard Interior Design took cues from the view when developing the materials, finishes and colour scheme.

The clients frequently entertain and host large parties therefore the kitchen needed to have the ability to accommodate their chef yet not feel like a catering kitchen nor uncomfortable when only two of them are using the house. The floor plan needed to be open yet have the ability to close off the kitchen from guests. Bringing in material from the exterior, expansive western red cedar barn doors stained grey to evoke a weathered shingle, were designed to seamlessly close off the kitchen from the great room when needed.

The cased opening to the kitchen was framed in the same western red cedar which continued within the tray ceiling above the custom 10’x6′ island. The custom cabinetry, open upper shelves, custom concrete counter tops and custom range hood created a kitchen that is both beautiful and highly functional for both personal and professional use. The custom kitchen sink hand cast white bronze became a form of functional art sitting under sliding glass pocket windows overlooking the manicured gardens and stone terrace. The custom kitchen table by Jeff Soderbergh is made of reclaimed oak and flanked by two custom cabinets that house the bar and serve ware used when entertaining.

The wet bar and beverage station are beyond the second cased opening and grey stained western red cedar is reintroduced on the walls and ceiling. Every detail within this project was studied, and every selection was purposeful. Martha’s Vineyard Interior Design believe having synergy among their clients, the architects, interior designers and contractors will always cultivate new design opportunities which makes the end result successful and inspiring.
