design et al are delighted to announce that NestEast have been shortlisted for Residential £2.5-5 Million (Project by Value) Award within The International Design and Architecture Awards 2018.
The initial brief was to design a development that complemented the architectural diversity of the area whilst standing out for all the right reasons. There was a strong industrial focus which was softened by the choice of materials used both internally and externally. The design aesthetic and layout of the building as a whole was quite unique, and this distinction was intentionally brought to life when approaching the project. There was an opportunity to create a more conversational style than most other property developments, which presented itself in fluidity of living spaces.
The primary external material used was a warm, textured brick that wrapped around the building in alternating courses to delineate each floor level. Panels of herringbone coursing provided intrigue to the main street elevation, adding to the unique character of this subtle and sympathetic response to the surrounding context. The serrated eastern elevation with a combination of fixed obscured glazing and clear openable windows created the opportunity to retain privacy from overlooking with respect to the dwellings opposite, whilst satisfying day-lighting and ventilation requirements providing direct views towards the street. The result is a unique, rhythmic façade that creates a strong identity for the development.
The space within was designed to maximise the living areas which resulted in curiously shaped, yet highly usable rooms. The interiors combined industrial chic with tactile touches reminiscent of Scandi-minimalist design. The colour palette within offered feminine neutral tones which contrasted yet complemented the stark exterior. Given the limited overall floor space, the three mews-style houses make the best use of the available area and create a feeling of space, complete privacy, and high-end design. The interiors have been carefully considered and work perfectly with unique shapes of the rooms. Overall, NestEast achieved a design-led, fresh, and interesting look for the development while remaining contextually relevant for the intended market.
