design et al are delighted to announce that NFA Architects have been shortlisted for City Space (Apartment/Penthouse) – London Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020.
A transformation of a city apartment to achieve an elegant yet masculine space with warmth and charm through materiality. The brief specified to Nick Farnell Architects was for a luxuriously appointed apartment with the highest quality details and absolute maximal use of space. It was of the utmost important to make the most our of every millimetre in the apartment, whilst finishing it to perfection.
The client wanted the space completely redrawn from the state that it was originally purchased. Before, the apartment was a maze of small rooms with bedrooms interspersed with living areas, there was no cohesion and the spaces were not used effectively. It had to be space for entertaining, so Nick Farnell Architects had to ensure that each space flowed into each other seamlessly, whilst also ensuring that there was a clear distinction between the private and entertaining areas. Additionally, the client requested an ensuite in the master bedroom which meant significant structural changes were required almost immediately.
The key to the success of the apartment was the newly drawn out layout but what makes it stand out is the quality of the materials and the detailing. Specialists were required to finish the numerous gilded elements in the apartment and the furniture was all hand made to fit the dimensions of the apartment. This is a luxurious and bespoke apartment to reflect the personality of the client. It Is calm and controlled in design and colour pallet, whilst being extravagant in the use of materials from the leather floor, leather desk and leather wall of the study to the gold and platinum tiles in the bathrooms or the earthy stones of the kitchen to the gilded metal panels.
This project was a relentless task of quality review both in design and execution led by the design team and achieved by the contractor.
