Period Property by Bayswater Interiors

Bayswater Interiors have been shortlisted for Living Space – UK Award in The International Design & Architecture Awards 2020.

The clients, a professional couple and their young family, had recently moved into a large property in Edgbaston, Birmingham, and had never employed the services of an interior designer before.  As this was to be their forever home, and the size of the property and number of decisions to make was overwhelming them, they decided to get help from Bayswater Interiors.

They loved the period features of their home, in fact that and the location had been what had initially persuaded them to buy it.  It was Bayswater Interiors responsibility to embrace the character and restore and features in need of TLC but also introduce a more contemporary element that would suit the young family and their own tastes.  The design overall seeks to balance the two main functions of the home as both an entertaining space and a family home.

The clients wanted an entrance hall that would be admired by guests on arrival but would also provide practical solutions to storage issues in the hallway on a daily basis, with the amount of shoes and school bags that a family of five had. The concrete tiled floor was to be replaced with one that was more in keeping with the property, and new feature lighting was required to provide a statement and add to the grandeur.

The Drawing Room was to be used as an entertaining space but also more regularly as an adult space in the evening, to read, relax or watch television.  At the weekends the family wanted to be able to enjoy time together watching sport or films in the room, so the furnishings needed to be comfortable yet practical, and able to withstand a drink spillage from the children.  The client was keen that it would also be a smart yet comfortable space for guests and conducive to conversation before and after dinner.  The scheme, whilst providing a more contemporary feel to balance the traditional elements of the building, needed to work for a number of years and not go ‘out of fashion’ quickly.

This home is situated in the city centre, yet from the moment you walk through the door the house feels like it could be in the countryside and has a quiet and relaxing feel with beautifully proportioned rooms and original features.
